Description

Charleston S.C. Servant Slave Tag,dated 1862,slave # 28.Clipped corners for more comfortable wear, two holes for stinging.1 3/8 x 1 3/8 square. This tag is made from a lead and tin mix,my research has shown that brass and copper was rarely used during war years because of scarcity.North South Trader lists these in their 8th Edition Civil War price guide for several thousand dollars each. They also give strong warnings for fakes.I have seen fake slave tags and they all are stamped brass and copper with new patina applied. This tag has the complete stamp marks for the town, type worker and date, the slave number was stamped in at time of use.I have personally owned this tag for 9 yrs,i purchased a 5 gallon bucket of dug relic from a man in the late 80s,he was a relic dealer who worked for the city of Charleston and would always hunt new areas that were under construction, the bucket also contained several buckles and 2 tongue in wreath buckles, many buttons and other various relics.I have no reason to doubt this relic, however i am no expert on these items. You may feel free to bid with confidence as i will grant an absolute 10 day return guarantee.Their will be no reserve.I am starting the bid at approx 1/4 of the book value.Any other questions you may have feel free to E-mail me and i will attempt to answer them.Slave tags are rarer than hens teeth, and ones with war dates are even more scarce.I am told the earlier the war date the better.THIS IS A 3 DAY AUCTION ONLY.Add 6.00 for S&H&I...
