322.
(OH: Fostoria) "P.E. Ballou Phrenologist". Perry Eugene Ballou, 1850-1913, married Olive Jackson in 1879 and had three children. He was a lecturer on the system of phrenology, which argued that human behavior could be explained by examining the shape of a person's head, and the 'bumps' on it.
Phrenology was introduced into America by a Viennese physician Johann Spurzheim in 1832, calling it 'the science of the mind'. Initially appealing to the elites, by the 1850's phrenology had spread to small-town America, aided by the traveling 'bump
doctor', close kin to the medicine show doctor. These professors of phrenology lectured, sold books and charts, and analyzed the heads of their audience for a fee, applying it to every aspect of life, from choosing mates and careers to raising children.
Perry probaby pursued this field from about 1868 until 1876, preferring it to the hard labors of his family farm in Michigan. Seeing the interest in the subject diminish in the 1870's, he entered and obtained a medical degree from Hahnemann Medical
College of Chicago in 1881. After graduation he first settled in Fostoria, OH, and there practiced homeopathic medicine. A couple of years later he moved to West Mill Grove, OH, and seems to have retired from practice in 1900 and died in 1913.
Bold Very Fine countermark in circle around rim of coin, on Good Indian cent, date covered by c/m. Scarce and popular medical c/m. Brunk Plate. Rulau reports these were given by Ballou to those who attended his lectures. TAMS Aug 1990 plate. William Swoger "Genealogical Numismatic Research", TAMS, 1991 plate.
