This is NOT true, you cannot cost effectively recover the gold from gold-plated sets. First, the smelting charge generally runs $75 to $100 or more, and the actual gold might be worth 10 cents or so per medal, at most. You can actually rub off the gold on some of the cheaply done pieces, it is so thin! I pay the same for gold-on-sterling as for sterling sets.
