108. Ancient Roman Sestertius made into a Medieval Christian Seal or Die for Making Baked Clay Tokens! This began as an ancient coin, a sestertius of the Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD). Much later the piece was engraved intaglio on the reverse with a Christian cross in the shape of a sword, surrounded by rays and a circle. In an outer circle are medieval Gothic letters that are too patined to read. This could have been used as a stamp to mark a monastery's goods, or it might have been used to make pottery tokens by impressing clay, and then firing the clay in a kiln. (Tokens of this sort occasionally are found in archaeological excavations, but are rare). The original sestertius of Antoninus Pius is well worn, but his laureate bust is clearly identifiable, as are the letters "AVG" for the title Augustus that appear to the left of the bust. 30 mm, brass, patined black, with areas of yellow. UNIQUE! We could find nothing remotely like this in any auction catalog or reference book! Engraving worn, VG, with sediment in recessed areas. $500.00-2000.00+

124. Roman Coin of Augustus (37 BC-15 AD) Countermarked by the Kings of Edessa in Messopotamia, ca. 30 . Christopher Howgego first identified this type of c/m, which is found on only a handful of ancient Roman coins, in 'Greek Imperial Countermarks' (RNS 1985). The very rare series is written in Old Edessan, and this stamp appears to be "Manou" for "King". The coin was minted by Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD) in Antioch, Syria. Emperor's Bust / "SC" in wreath. 22 mm bronze. G-VF, much of design obliterated by the countermark, which is a large 8 mm square "Manou" (see Howgego 153 and 695). VERY RARE, and this is the only example that has appeared at auction. Countermark VF, but weak to the left where the stamp may have begun to break up. $150.00-250.00+

127. Countermarked Roman Bronze Coin, ca. 50AD. Countermarked Roman As. This is a "lime coin" (a thin cast copy made on the German frontier), which is so worn that its design cannot be distinguished. It has two countermarks: 1. AVG for "Augustus" 2. TI C A for "Tiberius Caesar Augustus." The latter countermark of Claudius (41-54 AD) is quite unusual. It is only known on coins of Caligula (37-41) with Seated Vesta reverse (Sear-516), and was the subject of a 1980 article by Rodolgo Martini in Rivista Italiana di Numismatica. The purpose of the countermarks, which were applied at a Roman legion fort somewhere on the German frontier, was to authorize the continued circulation of such worn and light weight coins. 130. Ancient Roman Limesfaschen Unusual Lot of 20. "Limesfaschen" are ancient counterfeits of Roman bronze coins which were made on the German frontier. Often found in excavations of legion forts, but rarely seen on the numismatic market. These are about a third the weight of the original coins, and all have countermarks, both very worn. They were countermarked to validate worn coins for extended circulation, often with the countermarks virtually worn off. The marks were applied in legion forts and some can be identified. A couple have a very week "AVG" for 'Augustus'. Another has a previously unknown shield countermark, with others have large marks previously unknown to Brunk. A number have "TI CA" for 'Tiberius Caesar Augustus' (or the misspelled version "IT CA"). Until this group was discovered, that mark was quite unusual and rare, and had only been known on coins of Caligula (37-54 AD) with the Seated Vesta reverse (Sear-516). Most are so worn that nothing can be seen of the designs, although "SC" is visible on the reverse of one, and two seem to have the bust of Caligula. Lot of 20, including some Roman colonials also with countermarks. Only fair condition, but a rare lot of ancient counterfeits with Roman legion marks. $50.00-100.00+

132. Byzantine Empire Countermark, ca. 620 . The Byzantine General Belisarius invaded Sicily in 535 AD, and when Heraclius (610-641 AD) became emperor seventy-five years later, he found that most of the bronze coins in circulation there had been introduced by Belisarius' troops, and were in need of validation. Different types of countermarks were used for different weight coins. This 30 mm heavy follis of the Emperor Justinian I (527-565 AD) was countermarked with a pair of hinged stamps. The reverse stamp was carefully positioned to obliterate the original mintmark. It is a 15 mm circular depression with the initials "SCLS" (for Sicily). Exactly opposite on the other side of the coin is a crowned, facing bust of the Emperor Heraclius with a short beard beside his monogram. The countermarking probably was done in the towns of Syracuse or Catania. BMC-370 DO-241, Seaby-882. Original coin VG-Fine, countermark VF. Beautiful, dark sea-green patina. $50.00-100.00+

133. Eight Reales Piece of Cut Money, ca. 1650. Cutting coins was common in the 17th to early nineteenth centuries in the West Indies and frontier America as a way to make small change. One well known example is the P.B cut-and-countermarked quarter segments made during the early 19th century in New Orleans by the Planters Bank. This is a circa 1590-1650 eight reales of Philip III or Philip IV, which has been cut in half. What remains is the upper part of the crowned Spanish shield / Lower part of the Arms of Spain. Contemporary accounts note cutting often was done with an axe, but this piece was ineptly made. The maker cut it four more times, but three strikes did not go through, and a small additional segment has been clipped from this slightly bent silver piece's edge. Coin probably F-VF before cutting. $75.00-150.00+

135. Countermarked Rare Brockage Large Cent! 1849. The date of this coin can be seen in mirror image on the reverse as 184- with the last digit overstruck by the countermark so it might be "1849" or "1848" The large cent is slightly broad struck because of the multiple strikes. The reverse had at least two solid coin die incuse stampings with a shift of about 5 degrees between them, which resulted in offset stars. It finally was stamped at an extreme angle by the edge of another coin, which did not eject. This resulted in a depressed area of reeding at the coin's edge and also flattened part of the obverse date. The coin then circulated for some time before being stamped on both the obverse and reverse by "H. Whitcombe" This piece was called "H. Whitcomb" by others, and was listed as Brunk W-476, "H. Whitcomb" before it could be examined, and the "e" at the end of the merchant's name recognized. Rare Large Cent brockage, probably the only brockage countermarked! $1500.00-2000.00+

149. (NY:Lyons and Newark): UNIQUE Silver Hard Times Token, GUNSMITH MARKS. This double countermarked piece has never been sold at auction, and it is illustrated and discussed in both Rulau and Brunk. The first stamp is "A. Henshaw" Bar Punch by a gunsmith and engraver of Newark, NY, who lived close to the other gunsmith who stamped this coin. In fact, the marks appear to have been applied at the same time! Orra Bennett made percussion halflock guns in Lyons, NY, and applied the incuse marks "O. Bennett" and "Lyons" above and below "A. Henshaw". The Bennett mark is UNIQUE, and the only other example of a Henshaw mark also is stamped "1837", which dates these pieces. Very strong and bold XF marks on 1789 Two Reales, clear and strong Good, small hole at edge. A once in a lifetime chance to bid on a UNIQUE Gunsmith Hard Times Token, apparently stamped by two friends! $2500.00-2550.00+

150. (FL Treasure Island): Bil-Mar, 1939. Hank Thoele recently solved the puzzle of this enigmatic countermark, which previously was identified to Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay, and then to the Treasure Island Amusement Park in Scarborough Mere, Yorkshire, England. Treasure Island is a small community in Florida that is located west of St. Petersburg on an island connected to the mainland by the Treasure Island Causeway. One of its hotels is the Bilmar Beach Resort. So this is a Florida countermark that may have been used fifty years ago as the latest known date is 1948. Perhaps a FL researcher can discover the reason for its issue! "Bil-Mar/Treasure Island", strong and bold XF c/m on English Penny of 1918, VG. Less than a dozen known. $75.00-85.00+

151. (IA): G. Bitzer. This interesting countermark also is found on an 1867 Cedar Rapids, IA bridge token that is in the style of a Civil War token. Since Bitzer is a Scandinavian name, and the c/m also is known on a Norwegian two ore, the Bitzer c/ms are listed in some Scandinavia references. Until recently its connection to Iowa was uncertain, but a search of Civil War induction records indicates that two people named "G. Bitzer" enlisted in Muscatine County; one of them apparently stamped this coin years later. "G. Bitzer" on 1882 Jamaican farthing. One of only 3 known, all on different coins and tokens. 210. Ford Automobile Co. For decades coins have been found stamped with the trademark of the Ford Automobile Co. While we do not know the original purpose of these coins, the 1958 'Numismatist' reported that 'The tale of the Ford Company offering a new car in return for certain specified coins is an old one that crops up periodically...' Hank Thoele has noted that the Ford marks are of two sorts. Those with a broken flourish to the 'F' in 'Ford' were struck c 1963, and five years after the 'Numismatist' report. It has been speculated that someone took a broken Ford stamp from a trash bind, and used it to stamp coins sold to collectors at car shows, but the precise origins of this variety are uncertain. There is a relatively large number of these broken "F" coins, mostly on the silver half dollars that were common in circulation in the early 1960s. In contrast, the various stamps that do not have a broken 'F' are 'originals'. They often are in thick script, are deeply struck, and are worth more. This is an 'original' Script "Ford", bold XF, on obv. and rev. of Good 1904 Indian Cent. $50.00-60.00+

255. (NY: Norwich?) C. W. King, Photographer. King used a number of the small stamps meant for marking the back of his photographs to stamp coins before the Civil War. He probably is the person listed as 'G.W. King' in reference books on photography, and was a daguerreian in Norwich, NY in 1847. Most of King's marks are so small that they are difficult to read, but this stamp is large enough to see that the correct reading is "C. W. King".
